Automatic Litter Box – First Prototype
First working prototype of my automatic litter box. Tested drum rotation, structural alignment, and basic waste separation. The mechanics work better than expected—next steps are adding motors, sensors, safety features, and full automation.
For a long time I’ve wanted to build something that could take care of one of the most annoying parts of having cats:
the litter box.
So I finally decided to stop thinking about it and actually build an automatic motorized litter box.
This is the very first prototype — rough, unpolished, but fully functional enough to prove the concept.
🛠️ The First Prototype – Overview
The goal of the prototype was simple:
- rotate the drum smoothly
- collect waste automatically
- make sure nothing wobbles, jams, or binds
- and verify the mechanics before adding sensors, electronics, and safety systems
Here’s the first assembled prototype:

⚙️ Mechanical Structure
The main rotating drum sits on a stable frame, and the first prototype uses a simple mechanical linkage just to confirm that the rotation works as expected.

I learned quickly that alignment matters a lot — even a few millimeters off will cause tension, scraping, or uneven rotation.
But for a first build, it worked better than expected.
🌪️ Rotation & Waste Separation
The idea behind this system is similar to commercial automatic litter boxes:
- The drum rotates
- Clean litter falls through
- Clumps remain and fall into the waste compartment
- The drum resets back to the starting position

Even without sensors or a motor driver yet, the mechanics work surprisingly well — which was the whole point of this phase.
🪛 Iteration, Alignment & Future Steps
With the drum mounted and the structure in place, the final prototype shot for this version looks like this:

Next steps:
- add a NEMA 23 or geared DC motor for rotation
- integrate limit switches for safety and stopping positions
- add weight sensors to detect when a cat enters
- fully automate cleaning cycles
- enclosure redesign to make everything pet-proof
This prototype is only the first rough build, but it already proves the concept is solid.
Now comes the fun part: electronics, automation, and making it reliable enough for daily use.
